La Fée flew east for the Moscow Bar Show to establish trading relations for 2013 - much was learned of the new importation and distribution system recently put in place. We bumped into Salvatore Calabrese (The Maestro of London’s Playboy Club) and Peter Dorelli (of Savoy fame) on our outbound flight.

Update on Absinthe's legal dispute PDF Print E-mail

At last weekend's Whisky Live Paris, with my wife Jane and Marie-Claude Delahaye, I met many people as we tasted and chatted in St Germain, Paris.  I also met with Myriam Decoeur-Michel, the new Directeur Général of the  Fédération Française des Spiritueux (FFS) over a drink of La Fée Absinthe Parisienne.  We discussed the current fracas between distillers in Val-de-Travers and the rest of the absinthe producing world, with France prepared to protect her history and rights as the leading absinthe nation.

A group of key Swiss distillers initiated the running legal dispute, which was started in the Val-De-Travers region looking to gain regional protection for the name Absinthe:  the spotlight is now firmly on this region.  La Fée and Marie-Claude Delahaye flagged this problem with the French Federation of Spirits (FFS) back in 2010. Following this the FFS enabled the repeal of the French Absinthe Ban of 1915 in May 2011, reinforcing France's right to continue distilling one of her national spirits.

The current Swiss action started in court in Bern has seen a flurry of activity over the last 30 days, with global objections piling into the Swiss court, reflecting the outrage at any attempt to claim exclusive use of the word absinthe.  Marie-Claude Delahaye's knowledge of French & Swiss absinthe will undoubtedly prove important to the ongoing process.

We love Swiss absinthe; we distil Swiss absinthe; in fact our La Fée X•S Suisse has won three consecutive golden spoons at the Absinthiades - there is no doubt that some great absinthe is distilled in Switzerland.  Because absinthe is a plant, not a geographical region, it shouldn't really qualify for protected status in this way.

We are currently working with the FFS, alongside other members, to review the definition of absinthe spirits for the European Union.

The more French absinthe sold: the more Swiss will be too – the ideal outcome should be harmony between French and Swiss producers.

We love our Swiss along side our French – the only winners in all of this are the lawyers!

La Fée out-distil entire nation! PDF Print E-mail

Recent data released from Switzerland confirms the volume of Swiss absinthe (predominantly Blanche) is again in the minority compared to French absinthe (predominantly Verte) as was the case before the absinthe bans of the early 20th Century.

Last month's figures* were released stating the total volume of absinthe distilled by all Swiss distillers totaled 65,000 litres:  La Fée alone distil more absinthe (excluding La Fée X•S Suisse), along with other serious French producers such as Pernod Absinthe.

We are all excited about La Fée’s first official trip to Russia, with Hotels, Visas and flights all coming together for the Moscow Bar Show.

A seminar from last year's show.

I’ll be attending with Oscar Dodd and we will be available at stand B30 across all three days:  25th, 26th & 27th September, sampling the entire La Fée range.  I have also been invited to present the show's first seminar on the Absinthe category, with tasting, by the organisers scheduled for the Wednesday – with a question and answer session.  Otherwise you can find me and Oscar at the stand happy to chat, with a few essential absinthe cocktails to boot.

Celebrating the first anniversary of the repeal of France's 1915 Absinthe Ban PDF Print E-mail

Today is the 1st anniversary of the lifting of the 1915 French Absinthe ban. As one of the oldest absinthe-drinking guinea pigs alive today (having regularly drunk La Fée since returning distilling to France in May 2000) I am happy to report being in better shape than this guy...

'The Alarming Effects of Absinthe on Guinea Pigs

Image taken from the book 'Discours D'un Capitaine A Ses Soldats', by Captain Jacob of the 109th Infantry, warning his Gallic troops to the evils of absinthe.

...As we now know, this experiment (injecting Guinea Pigs with 'Absinthe extract') was rather unfair on the unfortunate test subjects - Absinthe has since been proved to be as harmless (when consumed in moderation, of course) as the next distilled spirit. So this weekend we at La Fée will raise a glass to everyone who has been enjoying the green fairy since our revival of this wonderous spirit more than a decade ago.

Santé - Cheers
